Gamelan Sekar Jaya returns UCSB's Multicultural Center Theater in Santa Barbara to feature the dazzling sights and sounds of traditional Balinese music and dance. This program will feature world-renowned Balinese artist I Dewa Putu Berata, who will lead 25 gamelan musicians on the dynamic four-tone gamelan angklung—complete with gongs, drums, and flutes—and the virtuosic five-tone gender wayang ensemble. Emiko Saraswati Susilo (GSJ Director & Guest Dance Director) will lead company dancers in both traditional and new dance works, including the world premiere of Legong Kokokan, a new work that reflects on the tragedies of the early 1960s in Bali. This subject, rarely touched upon, is inspired by the spirit's search for reconciliation and healing.
