Resonances of Bamboo & Bronze at ODC in SF

GAMELAN SEKAR JAYA, the Bay Area’s Balinese gamelan and dance company, brings the artistry of two brilliant artists from Bali to the new ODC stage. Musician/composer I Made Arnawa, from Bali’s National Institute of the Arts; and dancer Emiko Saraswati Susilo, from the renowned group Çudamani; will direct forty performers in a special concert featuring two kinds of Balinese gamelan—-the rare orchestra of giant bamboo marimbas, gamelan jegog, and the ceremonial four-tone bronze orchestra, gamelan angklung. Sekar Jaya’s dancers will perform three pieces, ranging from traditional masked dance (topeng) and ceremonial temple dance, to the newly created SUBAK, with choreography by I Made Moja, commissioned by and premiered at the 2009 San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival.
