Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Destiny Arts welcome you to the world premiere of TJAK BOX—a new work that brings together hip-hop and urban dance, Balinese dance, and live gamelan music. Lead artists Emiko Saraswati Susilo (Gamelan Sekar Jaya) and Rashidi Omari Byrd (Destiny Arts) find their inspiration in the story of Kunti and Karna from the Mahabarata, the great Hindu epic. Through movement, spoken word, song, gamelan and urban music, the artists explore the connections between this ancient tale and the life of youth in Oakland—here, today.

Each group will also perform works from its company repertoire.
