Named for the 'gong,' or most fundamental instrument, gamelan gong kebyar is the most prevalent form of gamelan music in Bali, performed on an orchestra of bronze-keyed instruments. Gong kebyar music is known for its virtuosity, acoustic brilliance, with both sudden and gradual contrasts in tempo and dynamics. The classes will be taught by renowned master Balinese musician and GSJ Guest Music Director, I Nyoman Windha with assistance from experienced GSJ members. Students will explore interlocking “kotekan” patterns, mallet technique, expression, and the role of each instrument in the gamelan ensemble. Prior musical training is not required, but students should be able to hum a tune or keep a steady beat. No gamelan experience required. For ages 11 and up!
