Nusantara 2022: Awal Cerita

  • West Crescent Circle UC Berkeley Berkeley, CA 94720 (map)

Nusantara is an annual Indonesian cultural event at UC Berkeley. A term originating from the Javanese island of Indonesia, Nusantara translates to “archipelago”, which describes the 18,307 islands of Indonesia in which Bali and Java are only two examples of. This event has long been postponed throughout the pandemic and is made possible thanks to the organizing efforts of BISA, the Berkeley Indonesian Student Association.

This year, the overarching theme of Nusantara will be “Awal Cerita,” which translates to the “Beginning of the Story”. This theme reflects the sense of a new beginning that is present as we reemerge through the isolation of the pandemic. It also reflects upon origins and diaspora and organizations such as BISA that originally came together around shared roots and stories. You can find out more about BISA, their events and student community here.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s Jegog Ensemble will be performing in the afternoon at 4:00pm. We will also be featured at one of the many booths with merchandise, instruments, and other goodies. Come learn a melody on some instruments, ask questions to get to know our community members, or just hang out!

Admission will be free and all festivities will be taking place outdoors.
