Gamelan Sekar Jaya brings the vibrant traditions of Bali to the stage at Alameda’s Rhythmix Cultural Works!
This performance features Gender Wayang, the traditional Balinese musical ensemble that accompanies shadow puppet performances and is also used in Balinese Hindu ceremonies, as well as the beautiful old-style, seven-tone Gamelan Semar Pegulingan. Semar Pegulingan is known for its sweet and delicate sound. It was an important musical tradition in the Balinese royal courts from the 17th to early 20th centuries. It was traditionally performed in the kings bedchambers whilst being entertained by his courtesans. The music is largely derived from “Gambuh” a type of classical Balinese theatre which recounts epic narratives of the legendary East Javanese king “Panji”. Throughout the performance, Sekar Jaya’s dancers will also grace the stage and floor.
The performance is led by Fall 2026 Guest Dance Director Ida Ayu Nyoman Dyana Pani, who is also a renowned maestro vocalist. She wil bring her beautiful voice to the performance, singing and dancing alongside this enchanting music. Semar Peguligan is lead by local Guest Artist Pete Steele, Gender Wayang by local Guest Artist Paul Miller and Ida Ayu Nyoman Dyana Pani, all accompanied by Sekar Jaya’s exceptional dancers and musicians.
