Gamelan in the Garden

Presented by Gamelan Sekar Jaya with the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, the annual Gamelan in the Garden returns to weave the beauty of Balinese Music and Dance throughout the San Francisco Botanical Garden.

Stroll through the gardens and delight in the sights and sounds of the birds, the breeze, and Balinese gamelan. Gamelan Sekar Jaya returns to the SF Botanical garden for our annual Gamelan in the Gardens. This year, Sekar Jaya’s ensembles will be in three different locations throughout the gardens.

The first two performances, Gender Wayang and Jegog, are free with garden admission. The final two performances, Gong Kebyar and Angklung, are ticketed. Join us for a special donor Meet and Greet event with this year’s Balinese Guest Artistic Directors from 2:30-3:30 and enjoy some light refreshments before the second half of the event. 

San Francisco weather can be unpredictable – bring your picnic blankets, camping chairs, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.

1:00-1:30pm Gender Wayang at the Fountain Plaza (free with garden admission) 

1:30-2:20pm Jegog at the Great Meadow (free with garden admission) 

2:30-3:30pm Artist Meet and Greet (ticketed, limited capacity)

3:30-5:30pm Gong Kebyar and Angklung in the Celebration Garden (ticketed, limited capacity)

Tickets increase by $5 on the day of the event.

This season, Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s Guest Artistic Directors are Ida Bagus Made Widnyana and Ida Ayu Arya Wayan Satyani. These phenomenal artists are long-time collaborators. Sekar Jaya’s Jegog ensemble is directed by local Jegog Director, I Gede Oka Artha Negara. Sekar Jaya’s Gender, Angklung, Dance and Gong Kebyar ensembles are excited to present new works at this year’s Gamelan in the Garden, created by our Guest Artistic Directors. Gamelan Sekar Jaya is excited to be joined by Harmonic Drift, an immersive and interactive percussion ensemble-on-wheels, sure to bring out everyone's inner child through playful and joyous exploration.

For the first time ever, GSJ is hosting a meet & greet as part of Gamelan in the Gardens!  Audience members will have the opportunity to meet and chat with our beloved Balinese guest and local artistic directors Ida Bagus Made Widnyana (Guest Music Director), Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani (Guest Dance Director), and I Gede Oka Artha Negara (Local Jegog Director) and some of our local ensemble coordinators and performers. Whether this will be your first gamelan event of the day, or a brief respite after the early afternoon performances, we invite you to enjoy the Botanical Garden’s beautiful pergola nestled in the Celebration Garden. Come for the friendly and inspiring conversation while enjoying refreshments including Indonesian desserts, wine, tea and coffee. Participants will have access to reserve advance seating for the 4pm performance in the Celebration Garden.
