Introduction to Balinese Music: Gong Kebyar

  • Gamelan Sekar Jaya 3023 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley, CA, 94705 United States (map)

Named for the 'gong,' or the most fundamental instrument of the ensemble, gamelan gong kebyar is the most prevalent form of gamelan music in Bali, performed on an orchestra of bronze-keyed instruments. Gong kebyar music is known for its virtuosity, acoustic brilliance, with both sudden and gradual contrasts in tempo and dynamics.

In these class series, Guest Music Artist, I Ketut Cater will guide students in exploring interlocking “kotekan” patterns, mallet technique, expression, and the role of each instrument in the gamelan ensemble. No prior musical training or gamelan experience is required - just bring your enthusiasm. This class is also a great opportunity for students with gamelan experience to improve their skills and try playing new instruments.

I Ketut Cater, S.Sn., is a renowned Balinese composer, performer, and master drummer from Banjar Pinda, Saba, Bali. A protégé of the legendary I Wayan Tembres, he is highly sought after as a teacher and jurist in Bali and internationally. His award-winning compositions have dominated Bali’s annual Gong Kebyar Festival since the 1990s. As a founding member and music director of Semara Ratih, he has led the ensemble to top festival rankings. Known for his exceptional drumming, especially for Jauk, Baris, and Barong dances, he also teaches at SMKI and the Agung Rai Museum of Art.
