This class will be led by GSJ 2025 Guest Dance Artist, Anak Agung Anom Putra. Students will be introduced to the foundational movements of classical Balinese dance, with a focus on dance styles classified by basic postures known as Agem. This course will center on Tari Baris, a traditional male dance form that is bold and powerful. While historically performed by men, this dance can be learned and performed by anyone, making the class open to all.
Students of all genders are welcomed; students must be at least 12 years old. These classes may sometimes take place outside in the outdoor patio area of the banjar building, depending on the preference of the instructor.
Dr. Anak Agung Anom Putra, S.S.T. is an acclaimed Balinese dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic director from Ubud, Indonesia. Renowned for his expertise in both male and female dance, he earned Bali’s highest performing arts honor, the Adi Sewaka Nugraha Award, in 2022. Known as “Anom Baris” for his award-winning Baris performances, he directs Semara Ratih of Ubud and has served as a jurist for major dance competitions. A lecturer at the Hindu University of Indonesia, he holds a doctorate in the religious aesthetic power of Baris Tunggal.

Students are welcome to invite their friends, family and community for an informal sharing during the final 30 minutes of class on November 19.
All classes are donation based on a sliding scale. No one turned away for lack of funds.
Suggested donation is $20/class. Full series registration and drop-ins welcome.
